Heat Pumps

Now is an opportune time to consider a heat pump for your Arizona home.

Heat pumps are one of your more efficient options for heating and air conditioning. They run on electricity and transfer energy rather than generate it. They can heat and cool your entire home—or just one room.

And beginning in 2023, the federal government offers a 30 percent tax credit to purchase and install a high-efficiency heat pump.

Tucson Heat Pump Services

Hamstra Heating & Cooling can remove your older furnace and air conditioner from your Tucson home and connect your new heat pump to the existing ductwork. For some of our older homes without ductwork, a ductless heat pump—also known as a mini split—is a great choice to keep your family comfortable.

At Hamstra Heating & Cooling, we are a family-owned and operated business ready to serve and assist with your HVAC needs. For over 40 years, we have dedicated our time and resources to helping you enhance your comfort.

When you turn to our licensed and NATE-certified professionals, you can trust we have your best interest at heart.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

Heat pumps transfer energy from one location to the other. They look and act like an air conditioner in the summer, using a refrigerant to absorb heat and excess moisture in your home and transfer it outdoors.

When it’s cold outdoors, a heat pump can reverse the flow of refrigerant to extract heat from the outdoors and transfer it into your home. Even when the temperature dips below 20 degrees, a heat pump can capture enough heat to keep you warm and cozy indoors.

Plus, you can lower your energy use. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), a heat pump can reduce your electricity use for heating by roughly 50 percent compared to electric resistance heating such as furnaces and baseboard heaters.

Tax Credits and Rebates for Heat Pumps

Under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the 25C Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credit provides a capped 30 percent credit of up to $2,000 for qualifying heat pumps. Products must be in the highest efficiency Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) tier.

You might also qualify for local and federal rebates. Our team at Hamstra Heating and Cooling will let you know which incentives are available and how to take advantage of them.

Heat pumps, on average, cost more upfront than a furnace and AC unit. These incentives help offset the costs, providing a more efficient heating and cooling option for years to come.

What Are the Benefits of a Heat Pump?

ENERGY STAR® lists several benefits to heat pumps over fossil-burning systems:

  • Improve your indoor air quality (IAQ) because there are no direct emissions, such as carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide.
  • Lower your energy bills by switching from electric resistance, propane, or oil to a heat pump.
  • In most homes, a heat pump can be easily installed as a drop-in replacement when you are ready to switch from a furnace and AC
  • An ENERGY STAR-certified heat pump can deliver up to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes.
  • Heat pumps provide heating and air conditioning in a single unit.

What Is a Dual-Fuel System?

A dual-fuel system pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace to ensure you have adequate heating no matter how low the outdoor temperature drops. But, as stated above, most high-efficiency models can handle cold temperatures below the freezing mark.

A dual-fuel system allows you to keep your furnace. You can use your heat pump during those moderate winter days and switch to your gas furnace when it gets too cold outside.

How Does Ductless Work?

A ductless heat pump pairs an outdoor compressor unit with an indoor air handler mounted to the wall or ceiling of a room. Ductless systems provide a flexible and convenient option when you have a home without ductwork.

Ductless systems also work well if you’re creating a new room in your home but don’t want to extend the ductwork. Perhaps you’re adding a sunroom or turning the garage into an exercise room. Instead of adding more ductwork, you can install a mini split for that one room.
