Stay Warm and Save Money This Winter
Now that winter is here, heating bills will start to rise. These simple things can help reduce your costs:
- Get a programmable thermostat
- Increase the insulation in your home
- Change your air filters monthly
- Have a professional perform your annual heating maintenance
Stay Safe This Winter
Often called the invisible killer, carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas created when fuels such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas and propane do not burn completely. In the home, heating equipment is a potential source of CO. Now that cooler temperatures are here, everyone will be turning on their heat and homes could be susceptible to a CO leak. CO incidents are more common during the winter.
- Make sure you have your heating system checked annually so a professional can detect any issues and prevent serious problems.
- Test carbon monoxide detectors regularly.
- Install a smoke detector near the furnace. Furnaces have the potential to leak CO due to malfunctioning heat exchangers. A carbon monoxide detector could save a life.
With higher than normal temperatures this Fall, many households have not turned on their furnace yet. The first time you turn on your heat, you may notice an odor. This is common and a result of dust accumulating on the heat exchanger over the months of inactivity. The high temperature of the heat exchanger burns the dust off over the first few heating cycles, and this odor should dissipate within 24-48 hours under normal circumstances. If you notice a smell that appears to be more “burning” or “electrical” in nature, turn your system off and contact us immediately!
“I’ve been working with Hamstra for over 20 years and they are still my number one choice in Tucson for new equipment or maintenance. A company of any size is only as good as its employees and this is where Hamstra shines brighter than the competition. Everyone is ultra friendly, courteous and helpful from the front office to the technician who pulls up in the driveway to work on the equipment. Of particular note is Richard, who I have had the real pleasure of working with on my last two service calls. He pulls up at the appointed time exactly and is extremely knowledgeable and professional. He patiently and completely answers all equipment questions in such a manner that the customer has complete confidence in his abilities and repairs. I will request Richard by name for all my future maintenance needs.”
