HVAC System Efficiency – Getting what you paid for

Did you know that according to the US Energy Information Administration, “Arizona homes use 4 times more electricity for cooling than the national average”. If you are like most homeowners, whether your comfort system is a new high-efficiency model or pushing a 20-year service life, you want to make sure you’re receiving the highest level of energy efficiency possible. Here are a few tips to make that happen:

Annual Maintenance – Having a licensed, professional HVAC contractor service and maintain your system annually not only helps prevent breakdowns and minimize downtime in the event of a failure, it can also save you money. A huge part of an effective maintenance program entails making sure the system is properly charged and that all coils are clean and free of sediment and debris. If either of these aspects are even slightly off the mark, your energy usage and annual utility bills will reflect this.

Air Filters – According to the Department of Energy, a plugged air filter can increase the energy consumption of your comfort system by 15%. Air filters should be checked monthly and cleaned or replaced as necessary to ensure unrestricted airflow through your system. Aside from the energy aspect, plugged filters can also result in costly system failures.

Duct Sealing – Have you ever tried drinking through a cracked straw? It requires you to work harder to quench your thirst. This is the same effect that leaky duct work has on your HVAC system. By allowing your conditioned air to escape, the system has to work longer and harder to achieve your desired comfort level. Aside from that, it also allows dust and dirt from inside your walls and attic to infiltrate your air stream. If you notice excessive levels of dust in the home or cold air blowing in attics or crawl spaces, you could potentially save quite a bit of money on energy costs and improve the indoor air quality within your home by having the duct system properly sealed. Ask us about our innovative AeroSeal duct sealing process.
